GOLS, GOTS, CertiPUR-US: What Mattress Certifications Actually Mean

Not all certifications are equal. We explain what each certificate actually tests, who issues them, and which ones matter most.

Brands use certification logos as signals of quality. Here's what each one actually tests — and which ones to prioritize.

CertiPUR-US: The Baseline

CertiPUR-US is issued by a not-for-profit organization and tests foam for harmful chemicals: ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. It also requires low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions. It is a safety baseline — it tells you the foam doesn't contain known harmful substances, not that it's made from premium or natural materials. Almost every reputable foam mattress brand carries it. Absence of CertiPUR-US on a foam mattress should be a concern.

GOLS: Organic Latex Standard

The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certifies that latex is produced from certified organic rubber tree plantations, processed without harmful chemicals, and meets worker welfare standards. It is administered by Control Union and requires both the raw material and the processing facility to be certified annually. GOLS is meaningful for latex mattresses — it verifies that 'organic latex' claims are backed by third-party audits, not just marketing language.

GOTS: Organic Cotton and Textile Standard

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) applies to the textile components of mattresses — covers, quilting fabrics, and wool components. It requires at least 70% certified organic fiber content and restricts hazardous dyes and processes. Brands like Avocado, PlushBeds, and Birch use GOTS certification for their covers. It's meaningfully different from brands that use 'organic cotton' without third-party certification.

GREENGUARD Gold: Air Quality

GREENGUARD Gold (previously GREENGUARD Children & Schools) certifies that a product meets chemical emission standards for indoor air quality — specifically for environments with children. It tests hundreds of VOCs and requires both initial testing and annual renewal. Many foam and hybrid mattresses carry GREENGUARD Gold alongside CertiPUR-US. It's most relevant for mattresses used in children's rooms.

Which Certifications Matter Most?

For foam mattresses: CertiPUR-US is non-negotiable, GREENGUARD Gold is a bonus. For latex mattresses: GOLS is the most meaningful verification of organic claims. For mattress covers and fabric: GOTS distinguishes genuine organic textile claims from marketing language. No certification replaces material quality or construction — a CertiPUR-US foam mattress can still be low-density, low-durability foam.
