1. Why Trial Periods Exist
Buying a mattress online requires sleeping on it to really know if it's right. You can't test it in a showroom for more than a few minutes, and those minutes don't replicate weeks of actual sleep. The trial period is the DTC (direct-to-consumer) industry's solution to this problem — you pay, it arrives, you sleep on it for weeks or months, and if it isn't right, you return it.
The economics make sense for brands too: a well-matched mattress customer rarely returns. Brands that offer generous trials typically have lower overall return rates because buyers feel comfortable committing.
2. How Most Trials Are Structured
Standard Trial Period Terms
- Duration: 100 nights is the most common. Some brands offer 180 (Saatva) or 365 nights.
- Minimum trial period: Most brands require 30 nights minimum before you can initiate a return. This is to allow a break-in period.
- Free returns: Most brands cover return pickup at no cost to you.
- Full refund: Returns typically result in a full refund to your original payment method.
- Mattress disposal: Returned mattresses are typically donated to charity or recycled — they're not resold.
3. The 30-Night Break-In Period
Almost every mattress trial has a minimum period — usually 30 nights — before you can initiate a return. This isn't arbitrary. Mattresses, especially foam and hybrid models, go through a physical break-in process as the materials compress and conform to your body weight. New foam can feel firmer than its rated firmness during the first few weeks.
More importantly, your body is also adjusting to a new sleep surface. If you've been sleeping on an old, saggy mattress, even a correctly matched new mattress may feel strange initially. Most sleep experts recommend waiting at least 3–4 weeks before making a final judgment.
How to Evaluate a Mattress During the Trial
Track morning pain levels and sleep quality each week. If both are trending in the right direction after 4 weeks, continue the trial. If both are consistently worse than before, you may have the wrong firmness or type — contact the brand before the trial ends.
4. Types of Guarantee Policies (Not All Are Equal)
The term 'guarantee' is used loosely in the mattress industry. There are actually three different types of policies, and knowing which one you're getting matters:
- Full refund guarantee: You return the mattress for any reason within the trial period and receive a full refund. This is the best consumer protection and what most top DTC brands offer.
- Exchange-only policy: You can't get a refund — you can only exchange for a different model. Some brands with 'lifetime guarantees' fall into this category. Read the fine print.
- Comfort exchange: You get one exchange (usually for a different firmness or model), after which the sale is final. Common with brands that offer a custom firmness option.

- Warranty claims vs. trial returns: Trial periods and warranties are different things. A trial period covers 'I don't like this mattress.' A warranty covers 'this mattress has a defect.'
- Damage: Returns are typically accepted only if the mattress is in reasonable condition. Stains can void the return. Use a mattress protector from day one — this also protects your warranty.
- Adjustable base compatibility issues: If you order an incompatible adjustable base and mattress combination, returns for the base may have different terms than the mattress.
- Foundation/frame mismatch: If a mattress develops sagging on an unsupported foundation, the brand may deny warranty coverage but honor a trial return differently.

7. How to Make the Most of a Trial Period
- Use a mattress protector from night one — it protects your investment and your warranty.
- Sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights before deciding. Initial impressions are often misleading.
- Keep notes on sleep quality and morning comfort weekly. You want trends, not single data points.
- Contact the brand before the trial expires if you're on the fence — customer service often has options.
- If you're exchanging for a different model, ask if you can extend the trial on the replacement.
